We've arrived in New Caledonia! I figured I would re-introduce our blog from almost a year ago as a nice way to talk about our adventures!
About three weeks ago, Ryan told me his work would be sending him on a three week trip to a small island off the coast of Austrailia called New Caledonia. I was a bit bummed...I hate when Ryan travels, we miss him so much! But I figured i could keep working on our home, adding shelves and such to our brand new basement, and when Ryan came back we'd get ready to leave for our family vacation in Virginia at the end of June. All of this was the plan until Ryan said jokingly "maybe i could convince my work to let you come too!" HA, I said, as long as they pay for it! Well guess what...they paid for it!! So here we are, at a beautiful hotel in New Caledonia....
No worries, by the way, I had no idea where New Caledonia was either ;) this small, beautiful island off the coast of Austrailia and Fiji is home to about 200,000 inhabitants, beautiful mountains and beaches, and barely any spoken English :) every now and then I'll come across an Austrailian, but pretty much everything and everyone here is French. I keep wondering "why on earth didn't I pay more attention in high school French?!?"
Our journey began, of course, back in Denver, where our little man Leo would begin his first of three plane rides for our journey. We were upgraded to first class, which is always nice except when Leo is fussy, then i start to get nervous as others around me offer pretend sympathy glances but they're really thinking "I hate you!" but praise the Lord, our wonderful son slept immediately after take-off and lasted the entire flight, so we arrived in Los Angelos at 9 pm with a pretty happy baby!
Have any of you every been to Los Angelos airport?? oh my goodness, something out of a movie, especially at night when all of the international flights take off! It was bonkers...luckily we had three hours in between flights, and Leo loves people watching so he was content pretty much the entire time. when we looked up the flight status a couple of days before, it said our flight to Fiji would be half empty. We brought along our car seat thinking "we'll just find an empty row, put him in the carseat, and all will be well!" FALSE. The flight was actually completely full, luckily we had a window and middle seat so i could nurse and not get strange stares :) Leo conked pretty much the moment we got on the plane, and lasted a good SEVEN HOURS! WAHOO! Every now and then I would have to readjust him on my lap or sleep nurse him because he would let out a howl, but he was pretty much set for over half the flight. when he did wake him, he was a super cute, happy baby, but we had to manage to keep him quiet for another couple of hours so the others on the plane could sleep. Ryan and I took turns walking him around, and some of the sweet flight attendants even took him for a bit to let us rest...Leo got to see first class on a double decker plane!! lucky! :) He fell asleep for the last hour or so of the flight, and when he woke he was in FIJI!
we had about a ten hour layover in Fiji, so we decided to spend it at a local hotel getting caught up on some sleep and taking leo to the beach. It was so wonderful! Leo didn't nap as we had hoped, but we had such a lovely time at the beach. This resort was simply beautiful...breakfast was amazing, the beach was breathtaking, and the resort was so unbelievably kid friendly! We noticed a board posted outside of our room that had kid activities ALL DAY LONG, everything from water polo, cooking classes, reading times...it looked wonderful! We wish Leo had been a bit older he would have really enjoyed it!
this picture below though pretty sums up our time in fiji, short, crazy and super fun :)
We'll be trying to post some more pictures and such as our journey goes on! we've been in New Caledonia for five days now, most of that time has been us (mainly leo) adjusting to the change in time and such. Please pray for his sleep, his naps have been AMAZING (2 two hour naps each day) but his night time sleep has been hit or miss (last night he was up three times, would only let momma rock/nurse him). and please pray for the rest of our journey! We've enjoyed the people so far, and the place is simply beautiful. the weather has mainly been cloudy but thats typical this time of year (its winter down here!) And everyone speaks french, which makes for interesting interactions, but oh well :) You only live once, Tonight we're going to a polynesian dance/dinner! horray! :)
many blessings friends and family! BULA (which is a fun fiji phrase meaning "CHEERS!")
